The China Construction Bank’s Value Creation Capabilities – A Comparison with China’s Other Big Three Banks Based on 2020 Annual Report Data


The annual report of a commercial bank based on the requirements of the Commercial Banking Law and the banking regulatory authority. The annual report is a collection of data and report of the bank development strategy, work performance and social responsibility fulfilment, which is officially released to the public after being examined and approved by the board of directors. It is usually issued every six months.

This article compares the annual report data of China’ Construction Bank (CCB) in 2020 with the publicly disclosed data of three other comparable banks (the Industrial and Commercial Bank of China, Agricultural Bank of China, and Bank of China, hereinafter referred to as the "Four Banks"). Seven dimensions of market value, including asset-liability scale and structure, capital adequacy ratio, risk and asset quality, benefit and efficiency, and development strategic transformation are analyzed and evaluated. A large amount of data and charts are used to analyse the changes in the value-creating ability of "four banks". In the process of value creation in 2020, the "four banks" identified in this paper are relatively stable and productive. Relatively speaking, CCB is relatively comprehensive and balanced, and is a relatively good large-scale listed commercial bank.
